Biography

Dr. Bazemore-Walker is an accomplished academic leader, STEM educator, and bioanalytical chemist with over 25 years of experience in research, teaching, and leadership at top research universities, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and liberal arts institutions. Known for her commitment to fostering inclusive, intellectually engaging communities, Dr. Bazemore-Walker empowers individuals so that they may thrive and reach their full potential.

As an Associate Teaching Professor of Chemistry at Wake Forest, Dr. Bazemore-Walker focuses on the implementation and assessment of high-impact practices – such as transparent teaching, high structure, and authentic research – into introductory chemistry and liberal arts core courses for the broad educational benefit of students. Recently, she has shown that entering first-year students who participated in her “Introduction to Research in the Sciences” course had an increased interest in scientific research and entered mentored research within the next year at a significantly higher rate than their matched peers.

Prior to joining Wake Forest, Dr. Bazemore-Walker was the inaugural Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusivity, and Thriving at the University of Richmond’s School of Arts & Sciences. In this role, she led the effort to promote equity and inclusivity in A&S through faculty and staff hiring, evaluation, and professional development while also working collaboratively with university partners to craft and advance University of Richmond’s policies and practices of inclusive excellence.

Before her time at the University of Richmond, Dr. Bazemore-Walker served as Chief Research Officer and tenured professor of Chemistry at Winston-Salem State University, where she led a reimagining of the university’s research strategy. She has also served on the faculty at Brown University and the University of Virginia, where she trained and mentored graduate students (graduated 6 with PhDs) and undergraduate students (mentored over 50; advised 2 “Best Thesis” awards) in her biological mass spectrometry research laboratory.
