Andrew Riggs (‘27) Advances Cancer Research Through Chemistry

Wake Forest undergraduate Andrew Riggs (‘27) is spending his summer exploring how chemistry can contribute to more targeted approaches to cancer treatment. As a URECA Scholar, Riggs is working alongside graduate student David Halatek and Professor Uli Bierbach in the Department of Chemistry at Wake Downtown. Their research focuses on developing chemotherapy agents designed to target specific cancer tissues by mimicking nutrients that cells take up and then activating after entering the targeted cells.

The project gives Riggs the opportunity to participate directly in interdisciplinary research with potential biomedical applications while learning alongside experienced researchers. His work exemplifies the hands-on opportunities available to Wake Forest undergraduates and the Department of Chemistry’s commitment to involving students in meaningful scientific discovery.
