X-ray Facility

The Chemistry Department X-ray Facility, located in newly renovated Salem Hall, Room 014, houses:

  • Single crystal analysis with an APEX CCD diffractometer system with Mo Kα radiation and a Bruker KryoFlex low temperature stage
  • Powder diffraction with a D2PHASER Desktop with CuKα radiation and a Lynxeye 1D Detector
  • GIXRD, XRR and similar measurements with the D8 DISCOVER with DaVinci. This is a multi-purpose instrument which can be configured for a wide variety of materials research applications.

Director: Dundappa Mumbaraddi

Using the Facility

Sample submission instructions

The WFU X-ray Facility operates on a 24/7 schedule under the direction of the x-ray lab manager. Graduate students and post-docs who have completed in-house training may work independently. Undergraduate students generally work directly with the x-ray lab manager. Samples can be submitted for total characterization by the director of the facility (fee may be required).

Available software (on site)

The facility includes several PC’s for structure solution and refinement of single crystal and powder data. Bruker APEX3, SAINT, SHELXTL,  DIFFRAC Components: Measurement Center, EVA, TOPAS, Multex, LEPTOS, and Nanofit as well as several other non-Bruker programs including GSAS-II.

Available databases (on site)

Cambridge Structural Database™ (CSD), ICDD PDF-2 and the ICSD.

Other resources

Single crystal data is accessed through the ReciprocalNet server. The facility also houses a Meiji Stereozoom EMZ-5TRD microscope with a Nikon CoolPix995 digital camera and a Micro-Mill Grinder.

History

The Chemistry Department X-ray Facility was established in 1996 to provide single-crystal x-ray analysis services to members of the Chemistry Department and other users across the campus.  In 2003, analytical services were extended to include characterization of powder samples and the acquisition of 2 new instruments in 2011-2012 expanded characterization capability to non-ambient temperatures and thin films. Salem Hall was completely renovated in 2017-2018 and the Shared NMR/X-RAY Facility was relocated to Salem 014 in Fall 2018.
