Trace Element Center

Thanks to the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation program (Grant 1531698), and to Wake Forest University, trained WFU students, faculty and their direct collaborators have free access to state-of-the-art instrumentation:

  • Agilent 8800 ICP-MS/MS
  • Agilent 4200 MP-AES
  • Agilent 5110 ICP OES
  • Ethos Up Microwave-Assisted Digestion (MAD) system (Milestone)

All instruments are available to trained users on a by-reservation basis (Mon-Fri, 9:00-5:00). Google Calendars for each specific instrument are shared with users after going through training using their particular samples.

Training Information

  1. Contact Dr. Brad Jones (jonesbt@wfu.edu) to schedule a meeting and establish a strategy to digest your samples and adequate them to the ICP-MS/MS, ICP OES, and/or MIP OES (Agilent 4200 MP-AES) requirements.  Students and researchers will be trained on the ICP-MS/MS, the ICP OES, and/or the MIP OES using their digested samples.  Trained users will then receive an email letting them know that the Google Calendars for the ICP-MS/MS, the ICP OES, and/or the MIP OES have been shared with them.
  2. Students and researchers will then be trained on the microwave-assisted digestion (MAD) system using their specific samples, and an efficient digestion procedure will be developed. Prof. Donati will work closely with individuals involved in this step until they feel comfortable using the instrument by themselves. Trained users will then receive an email letting them know that the Google Calendar for the MAD system has been shared with them.
  3. Students and researchers will be trained on the ICP-MS/MS and/or the ICP OES using their digested samples. For the ICP-MS/MS, different strategies will be evaluated to minimize spectral interferences using the collision/reaction gases available (i.e. He, H2, O2 and NH3). Prof. Donati will work closely with individuals involved in this step until an efficient method is established and the analysts are comfortable using the instrument by themselves.Trained users will then receive an email letting them know that the Google Calendars for the ICP-MS/MS, the ICP OES, and/or the MIP OES have been shared with them.

Note: Re-training may be required for application to new samples and for users having no contact with the instrument for more than six months.
