Please congratulate Courtney Smith on her selection to the 2015 Senior Showcase program sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Library.  Courtney Smith will be representing Division V and showcasing her research project titled: “Mechanism of Action of Metronidazole, a Nitroheterocyclic Antibiotic”

Courtney is a Chemistry and Biology double major from Windham, New Hampshire. She has worked as an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Patricia Dos Santos’ lab since the spring of 2014. Her research project in Dr. Dos Santos’ lab focuses on nitroimidazole antibiotics. Although these antibiotics have been used since the 1950s, their mechanism is not understood. Courtney’s project aims to further understand the targets. Her data has indicated the importance of the nitro moiety for antibiotic activity of nitroimidazole drugs, as well as the importance of low molecular weight thiols in protecting bacteria against these drugs. After graduation, Courtney will pursue a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at Yale University.
