FoC Career Event Focuses on Government Regulations

The 6th annual Friends of Chemistry Career Event was held Friday of Homecoming (Sept 19).  The stated theme of the event was careers in the area of government regulations.  Three FoC pannelists included   Charles Buchanan (’54), president and founder of Roan Industries,  Summer Hanna (PhD ’06) Senior Scientist in Regulartory Oversight Reynolds American, and Dr. Glenn Simon, Corporate Director of Toxicology with Solvay USA.  Additional input was offered by alumni from the floor including Jim Flemming (’74) of the Naval Research Labs.

In addition to some lively contributions, some common themes emerged concerning preparation for non-lab careers with a chemistry degree – In addition to being able to develop a working knowledge of topics of applications of chemical technology, there was surprising unanimity in the need to develop basic statistical skills.
