Deacon Profile: Mark Welker

Mark Welker, currently the William L. Poteat Professor of Chemistry, has previously served as Associate Provost for Research and Vice Provost in addition to holding the position of Interim Provost last year.

Welker received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Florida State University.

After post-doctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley, Welker joined the faculty in 1987. Last November, a treatment for prostate cancer developed by Welker, George Kulik, professor of cancer biology and Fred Salsbury, professor of physics, along with their student co-workers, was featured on the cover of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
